Nigeria to improve data collection on agriculture

01 Jun 2017

Nigeria was handed over a Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) system to improve its data collection on agriculture during an official ceremony on 31 May 2017 in Abuja. The system was jointly developed by AMIS and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with support from a capacity building project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

By allowing real-time data gathering, the CAPI system will drastically reduce the cost of data production and strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to monitor developments on agricultural markets and promote agricultural development. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Bukar Hassan (pictured on the right), said that “the only way agricultural production can be sustained is when the farmers are able to reach out to various markets to sell their products ‎and make some returns to enable them further invest.” The system is also expected to allow the country to provide more timely market information to the AMIS Secretariat for global assessments.
