Sixth session of the Rapid Response Forum
At the invitation of the German Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the sixth session of the AMIS Rapid Response Forum (RRF) was organized in Berlin, Germany.
The meeting reviewed the first five years of AMIS since the launch of the initiative in September 2011 and discussed future work priorities. Meeting participants particularly appreciated the quality and timeliness of AMIS market forecasts that have helped ensure more informed policy making. Others highlighted the fruitful exchanges that AMIS has promoted through meetings of the Global Food Market Information Group and the AMIS Rapid Response Forum. Building on these achievements, meeting participants encouraged AMIS to continue the good work and further strengthen the initiative, for example by collaborating with the private sector and expanding activities in policy monitoring.
The meeting also reviewed new initiatives of the Secretariat to strengthen country engagement, which meeting participants perceived as a promising way forward to involve national focal points more regularly in the monitoring work of AMIS. The meeting elected Argentina to become the new Chair of AMIS, taking over from Germany at the forthcoming meeting of the Global Food Market Information Group in June 2017.
As a side event, the current Chair of AMIS (Germany) organized an Expert Panel to discuss "Risk as a driver of agricultural markets' instability and uncertainty". Speakers included Prof. Peter Höppe from Munich Re; Mr. Carsten Beck from Cargill; Mr. Jesus Anton from IFAD; and independent consultant Mr. Klaus-Dieter Schumacher.
