9th session of the Global Food Market Information Group
The ninth session of the Global Food Market Information Group took place at FAO headquarters. Apart from informing country representatives on AMIS progress and the status of data submissions from AMIS participating countries, the meeting reviewed the current market situation and outlook of the four AMIS crops: wheat, maize, rice and soybeans.
Several AMIS participating countries, including China, Japan and Indonesia provided updates on recent policy developments with a possible impact on commodity markets while the AMIS Secretariat presented outcomes of selected capacity development activities. A case study focusing on international maize markets familiarized meeting participants with the wide variety of financial instruments available to hedge before the harvest.
Finally, the Group on Earth Observations Global Agricultural Monitoring initiative (GEOGLAM) that had just been elected as the elventh member of the AMIS Secretariat discussed how earth observations and remote sensing can help in strengthening outputs of AMIS. To this end, national focal points of AMIS and GEOGLAM will explore options for enhanced collaboration in the future.
