12th session of the Global Food Market Information Group

13 Nov 2017

The twelfth session of the Global Food Market Information Group took place at the headquarters of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland. The one-day event was organized back-to-back with the Global Grain Geneva conference that featured many AMIS speakers and presentations.

After discussing latest developments in global wheat, maize, rice and soybean markets, the Information Group considered possible threats to global food trade flows. To stimulate the debate, Chatham House presented a new study on "Chokepoints and Vulnerabilities in Global Food Trade Flows", which recommends a stronger role for AMIS to monitor "critical junctures on transport routes through which exceptional volumes of trade pass". Country representatives encouraged the AMIS Secretariat to explore in more detail the possible scope and value of monitoring chokepoint risk through AMIS.

The afternoon session of the meeting featured several topical presentations, including results of efforts to measure market sentiment; progress and next steps of GEOGLAM; and a new initiative of the European Union to increase transparency in the EU cereal, oilseed and protein crop sector. The agenda of the meeting can be downloaded here.

Following the Information Group meeting, members of the AMIS Secretariat and country representatives were actively involved in the Global Grain Geneva Conference, for example in sessions discussing geopolitical risks for food trade and the outlook of the soybean market in South America.
